Description

Many samurai carried two swords, but few used both at once. According to legend, the exception was the 17th century folk hero Miyamoto Musashi, who is believed to have developed a two sword system for dueling. On this DVD, Mitsugi Saotome Sensei demonstrates and explains his own two sword system. Beginning with basic stances, he moves to defenses against attacks with a single sword and eventually to defenses against multiple opponents. He also illustrates the direct connection of two sword movement to Aikido's empty handed throwing technique. Many of the demonstrations shown here were performed recently for this DVD. The film also contains rare footage of Saotome Sensei's 1988 Two Sword Seminar at the Chicago Budokan. Enjoyable for the beauty and ingenuity of Saotome Sensei's movement, this unique, hour long instructional DVD explores martial exercises for integrating and balancing the body's right and left sides. Mitsugi Saotome is the chief instructor of the Aikido Shobukan Dojo in Washington, D.C. and also serves as the supervisory instructor for more than 70 affiliated dojo of the international association, Aikido Schools of Ueshiba. He began as a special apprentice with the founder of Aikido, Ueshiba Morihei in 1955 and continued for 15 years until the founder's death in April of 1969. From 1960 until 1975 Master Saotome taught at the World Aikido Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, where he held the highly respected position of senior instructor. In 1975 Master Saotome decided to come to the United States. When asked why, he responded: ''The goal of Aikido and O Sensei's dream is that all the peoples of the world live together as one family, in harmony with each other and their environment. The United States has the opportunity to set a great example.''
