Description

The katas trained in Wado-ryu are also trained in other styles such as Shorin-ryu, Shito-ryu and Shotokan. The difference in performance is rather small, but quite significant to characterize the style. Wado-katas put more weight on the training of basic body movements of traditional budo arts. In Wado-ryu katas you will find more similar movements to Kendo, Aikido, Jodo and other Japanese martial arts like: avoiding, escaping, entering, pushing, floating, etc. Unnecessary movements should not be performed in Wado-ryu katas. In this book, Shingo Ohgami, a direct student of Wado-Ryu founder Hironori Otsuka, shows and explains the nine official kata of the style in great detail. Shingo Ohgami (Japan, 1941) started training karate in 1960 when he entered Tokyo University where Sensei Hironori Ohtsuka was the instructor of the karate club. Shortly after arriving in Sweden, he started a karate club which grew to such a proportion that he decided to give up a career in chemistry and has been engaged in teaching karate fulltime since 1972. He was graded to 5th dan black belt by Sensei Otsuka in 1974. Other than karate his interest spreads to laido, Jodo, Aikido, Ryukyu Kobudo and Taichi Chuan. He is a member of the Japanese Budo Academy.
