Diverse races and cultures in the Philippines blended their heritages over the centuries, producing a common method for employing sharp swords, daggers and fire-hardened sticks in combat. When the Philippines were invaded by the Spanish, the deadly fighting skills of Filipino warriors nearly overwhelmed them. Escrima was subsequently outlawed, but the techniques did not disappear but were preserved in secret. Historically, arms incorporated three related methods: espada y daga (sword and dagger), solo baston (single stick): and sinawali (two sticks of equal length, twirled in ''weaving'' fashion for blocking and striking). Modern Arnis incorporates empty hand moves based upon the same motions used in solo baston and sinawali. Unlike kali, his system also uses low kicks and takedowns for a more well-rounded approach. Remy Amador Presas is one of the Philippines' premier stick fighters and has become a national figure in his native country for his blending of the countless island combat styles into one system, which he named Modern Arnis.
