Description

The name GoJu-Ryu was given to this martial art by Chojun Miyagi Sensei. His sensei, Kanryo Higaonna, had studied the martial arts of southern China. Having travelled to Fuzhou, in Fujian Province, Higaonna Sensei devoted his entire being to the study and perfection of these arts. Upon his return to Okinawa, he taught and spread the arts he learned, which became known as Naha-te. His most devoted astudent was Chojun Miyagi, who developed the art even further and passed it down through his disciple, An'ichi Miyagi, who in turn passed it on to Morio Higaonna. Morio Higaonna has spent his life in the pursuit of the true history of Goju-Ryu, seeking out and interviewing the students, family members and friends of Kanryo Higaonna Sensei and Chojun Miyagi Sensei. Tens of notebooks with testimonials told by the actual participants, as well as more than 100 cassette tapes of the interviews the author conducted. An'ichi Miyagi Sensei felt that history was like technique - it should be guarded and taught only to students after they have proven their loyalty. Thus for a long time he forbid Higaonnna to publish this book. In 1991 An'ichi Sensei granted permission since he had become disheartened by all the changes that have taken place, and are still taking place, in the technique of Goju-Ryu, not only because of all the different factions that have emerged since Chojun Sensei's death, but also in the name of sport and standardization. Not only have there been changes in the technique, but many versions of " history" have emerged since Chojun Sensei's death as well. With the support of Ken Miyagi, Chojun Miyagi's fourth son, Higaonna Sensei did record meticulously the true history of Goju-Ryu. • • • Master Morio Higaonna, 10th dan and Chief Instructor of the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation (IOGKF), was born in 1938, in Naha the capital city of Okinawa. Through long hours of arduous training and with a ferocious dedication which is rare in even the greatest of Masters, Master Higaonna quickly established himself as one of the island's top karate men. In 1960, at the age of 22, he moved to Tokyo, mainland Japan to Study commerce at Takushoku University. He was invited to teach at Tokyo's Yoyogi dojo where he soon attracted a large following of dedicated karateka, sometimes he taught as many as 1 ,000 students a day. Students traveled from all over the world to train with Master Higaonna and as a result the IOGKF was established in 1979. The IOGKF is now established in 50 countries world-wide.
