Description
Karate Ideals is a collection of serious, thought-provoking essays that examine the philosophical, historical, and societal influences on the development of modern karate, and how those influences are reflected in modern karate training. From ancient China to feudal Japan-to modern karate tournaments, Randall Hassell takes the reader on a thoughtful excursion from karate's earliest roots to its modern expressions.
From "The Sun Source" to "Modern Budo: Defeating the Ego," the author shows how karate-do has transcended all racial, ethnic, and societal boundaries to become a valuable, modern art of self-development and self-expression.
A practitioner himself of karate-do since 1960, the author brings his considerable experience to bear in striking interviews with Japanese karate champions Hiroshi Shirai and Takeshi Oishi and includes the transcript of his famous magazine cover story, One Step at a Time: The Story of Masatoshi Nakayama.
Profusely illustrated, Karate Ideals is a serious book that challenges the reader's imagination and inspires us to look deeper into ourselves as human beings.
Randall G. Hassell began his study of Karate in 1960, and received his black belt from the Japan Karate Association in 1968. For almost five decades, he has devoted himself to the teaching and study of karate-do and other martial arts. In addition to teaching in his school in St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Hassell oversees the instruction of thousands of students and travels extensively, lecturing and officiating.
