Before taking up Wing Chun, the author studied the Sil Lum style, which featured such forms as 'A Dragon and Tiger in Conference' and 'Nine Dragons at Sea.' In the preface Yimm Lee explains: ''I wasted three and a half years performing kata. Not once during those years did I see the students spar. We were told that this type of training would eventually lead to deadly 'internal strength.' I realized later that the whole repertoire was just a time-killing tactic to collect the monthly fee. In disgust, I quit practicing this particular Sil Lum style. Later, through my brother Bob, I was introduced to my future wing chun instructor, Bruce Lee. I really appreciated the simple and direct style of Wing Chun and its practical application. What you practice today, you can use today. I was fortunate to be able to study under Bruce Lee and be his assistant instructor. When he was living in Oakland, we were in daily contact.
